Mobile Multi-sensor Geomatics (M2G) Systems - An Emerging Technology Sector in Geomatics
Geomatics is an emerging, innovative, key information technology for the twenty-first century that deals with the acquisition, modeling, analysis and management of spatially referenced data and its real-time applications which includes applications such as positioning by satellites, monitoring and control through remote sensing, land information management through Geospatial Information Systems (GIS), as well as real-time time applications such as forest fire fighting and wildlife tracking. The benefits of these systems are numerous: autonomous operation without reference to ground control; portable deployment around the globe, be it on vehicles, helicopters, or airplanes; reduction in both the time and cost of data collection; data archival permitting additional data collection without additional field surveys; and finally the immediate transfer of sensor improvements to the overall system.
The Promise of Smart Phones for Urban and Indoor Navigation Applications
MEMS are integrated micro devices or systems combining electrical and mechanical components which has a projected 10-20% annual growth rate to reach 240 billion US$ market by 2015. This presentation will provide an overview of inertial navigation platforms that solves the fundamental problem with present navigation and positioning technology, the ability to have seamless, autonomous, accurate and reliable navigation, positioning information for indoor as well as smartphones MEMS-based technology in action through real application in land vehicles, machine control, portable navigation and smart phone usage in urban and indoor environments.
