Department of optoelectronic engineering

Optoelectronic Engineering Department is affiliated to School of Instrumentation and Optoelectronic engineering. It is the major constructing unit of Optical Engineering Discipline and Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering Major in Beihang university, and is in charge of undergraduate teaching, graduate cultivating, frontier research and international collaboration and exchange. Along with Optoelectronic Technology Institute, they form the extremely distinctive ‘Beihang Optoelectronic Group’

‘Beihang Optoelectronic Group’ originated from the first Aviation Gyroscope and Inertial Navigation Discipline proposed by Qian Xuesen and created by Lin Shie in 1956, pioneered optic fiber gyroscope research by Zhang Weixu in 1982. Since its establishment, ‘Beihang Optoelectronic Group’ has been leading the development of optical gyroscope research in China, and actively exploring other research fields such as imaging and display. Since the establishment of Optoelectronic Engineering Department, it has been participating in the constructions of national and ministry key laboratories such as ‘Inertial Technology’, ‘Precision Opto-electromechanical Integration Technology’ and ‘Optic Fiber Gyroscope Engineering Base’. It is granted funds from National Natural and Science Foundation, National Key Research and Develop Program and other projects, with a total funds over 300 million RMB. Optoelectronic Engineering Department has laboratory area over 3000 square meters, including advanced imaging and detection lab, display and imaging lab, micro and nano integrating lab, and other labs.

Optoelectronic Engineering Department has a faculty of 21 employees, including 7 professors, 9 associate professors and 5 staffs. Among them, one National Outstanding Youth, one National Excellent Youth, two National Oversea Excellent Youth, two New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education, one fellow of SID/Optica/SPIE/COS, high level talents consist a third of the faculty.

Optoelectronic Engineering Department conducts researches of the scientific frontiers, the main battlefield of the economy, and major national defense needs, forming research directions such as (1) advanced imaging and detection, (2) 3D display, (3) micro and nano integrating, and (4) inertial navigation. In scientific frontiers, it pioneered single-pixel, single-photon, pico-second advanced imaging, published highly cited papers such as Nature Communications, Science Advances, Light: Science & Application. Facing main battlefield of the economy, it undertook projects such as National Natural and Science Foundation Major Instrument, and National Key Research and Develop Program, developed cutting edge instruments such as naked eye 3D display. For major national defense needs, it broke through the bottleneck of optic fiber gyroscope, developed high performance products, and won the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2019.
